Washington forward Alexander Ovechkin has become the highest-paid player in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL).
"Report" , citing TASS, reports that the 39-year-old hockey player, who started playing in the NHL in the 2005/2006 season, earned $2.92 million ($984,000 annually) in the first three years of his contract.
The Russian player signed a 13-year contract for $124 million in 2008. He then signed a new 5-year deal in the summer of 2021 worth a total of $47.5 million.
With this, Ovechkin managed to earn a total of $161.72 million during his NHL career. His contract with Washington expires next season. The forward will earn another $9 million during that period.
It should be noted that Alexander Ovechkin recently broke the record of four-time Stanley Cup winner Wayne Gretzky by scoring his 895th goal in a regular season NHL game against the New York Islanders.
