Century's "chronic disease": "Neftchi" remains without awards again
The XXXI round of the Misli Premier League crossed out "Neftchi"'s desire for an award.
Idman.biz reports that it has been officially confirmed that the Baku club, which lost 0:3 in the Azerbaijan derby against "Qarabağ", will finish the season outside the "top three".
After 31 matches, the "white-blacks", who have only 35 points, are 18 points behind "Araz-Nakhchivan" in 3rd place. The country's oldest club will not win a medal regardless of the results of the last 5 rounds.
"Neftchi", which still holds the title of the team with the most medals in the Premier League, will watch the award winners from the outside for the second season in a row. The Baku club was 5th in the last championship.
With this, "Neftchi"'s "chronic disease" of the XXI century continued. If the team remains without medals for one season, it continues to watch the "top three" in the next championship.
Such a "black streak" first occurred at the end of the first decade of the century. "Neftchi" remained without an award in the 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons.
The next medal drought lasted longer. After three consecutive championships, the "white-blacks" had to wait 4 years for just bronze. The team finished the 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons outside the medalists. The third series of the century started last season and reached 2 in the current championship.
In general, the "white-blacks" finished the championship empty-handed 12 times. In the 1993 and 1993/94 seasons, the longing lasted 2 years. Only once - in the 1997/98 season, such failure was short-lived.
It should be noted that "Neftchi" won 9 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals in the Azerbaijan championships.
