Siyasat Asgarov, the head coach of the Neftchi women's team, shared his thoughts on becoming the champion of Azerbaijan and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
In an interview with "Report", the specialist said that despite winning the championship last year, they faced failure in the international competition.
He stated that they only experienced certain difficulties in matches with "Sumgayit" this season:
"This time the championship was a little different. Because the number of teams was small. However, the approach of the management of the "Neftchi" club to women's football in recent years, and doing good work is one of the main architects of this championship. There were certain difficulties in the games against "Sumgayit" in the championship. However, we won both matches against our opponent. In the end, we won the championship. That's what matters. We also won the championship last season. But unfortunately, we could not do good things in the UEFA Champions League. I hope that we will be lucky this year and we will be in a suitable group. More importantly, we will earn rating points for our country."
S. Asgarov emphasized that the main goal in the UEFA Champions League this year will be to get out of the group:
"We have two games left in the national championship. Then we will give the team a rest. There should be a draw in June. After the opponents are determined, the management will get acquainted with the plans. Probably, we will start training camps after that. This year we want to form the team better and achieve the result we want. I don't think there will be many changes in the squad. We will transfer players to certain positions. There will be group games. Only group winners will advance to the play-off stage. The team that wins in this stage will advance to the main stage. Our main goal will be to get out of the group."
It should be noted that after 12 games, "Neftchi", which scored 36 points, is 10 points ahead of its closest follower "Sumgayit" in the tournament table of the AFFA Higher Women's League.
