The Azerbaijan Chess Federation organized the "Champions Battle" tournament in Baku to further reward the winners of the national championship held in February.
According to "Report", the president of the federation, Mahir Mammadov, said this in a statement to journalists after the tournament's awarding ceremony.
He emphasized that the tournament was interesting:
"This idea stems from the immense attention we pay to the Azerbaijani champions. The Azerbaijani championship, which we organized in February this year, created a great resonance in the country and in the world. Rauf Mammadov and Gunay Mammadzada became Azerbaijani champions. After that, we wanted to reward our champions with something extra. We organized a challenge for the world champions, an interesting game format and a competition in a museum environment."
It should be noted that, based on the results of rapid and blitz games, the Azerbaijani champion Rauf Mammadov beat FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov (Uzbekistan) with a score of 12:10.
In another match, the winner of the women's national championship, Gunay Mammadzada, defeated world and European champion Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria) with the same score.
